Acoustic recording using four different devices

In September 2025, Kieran Storer, Eva Herreros Moya and Honor Phillips travelled to the Mosquito Control Service in Barcelona, Spain, to record the flight tones of mosquitoes.

The fieldwork was very successful with 659 mosquitoes recorded in total - the majority were Aedes albopictus but other species were also recorded including Culiseta longiareolata, Culex pipiens, and Culex laticinctus.

Various hand-held monitoring devices were used to investigate issues that may arise with respect to capturing flight tones in the wild and these data will now be used to train the algorithms that underly the HumBug tool.

We are very grateful for support from colleagues at the Mosquito Control Service.
