24-28 March 2025
Marianne Sinka and Kieran Storer travelled to Jersey for a week to start a programme of fieldwork aimed at capturing the flights tones of invasive Asian hornets.
This first phase of fieldwork (March to May) is targeting the queens. Smartphones running the MozzWear app and powered by small solar panels are attached to spring traps to capture the acoustic signatures, with species identification being done in-person, using cameras or by checking by-catch.
Later in the season hawking hornets at bee hives and foraging worker hornets at bait stations will be recorded (summer/autumn).
We are immensely grateful to the Invasive Species department in the Government of Jersey and the team of local volunteers who are helping us with advice, identifications, and recordings.
